How do I clean my film for scanning?

There are several ways you can clean your film, but all require great care not to damage them.

  1. Handle your film and negatives with lint free gloves.
  2. Compressed air
    • Ensure your negatives or slides are on a clean surface and are secured.
    • Use compressed air to remove dust and debris from your negatives.
  3. Lightly dab the affected areas with a lint free cloth or cotton swab with a small amount of 98% Isopropyl Alcohol.
    • Do not use lower concentrations of alcohol than 98%, too much water can distort the image.
    • Do not leave the alcohol on the film for extended periods of time as it may damage it further.
  4. Keep them in a clean, dry area to finish drying.
  5. After they have dried, wipe them off with a clean lint-free cloth to remove any oils or debris that loosened during cleaning.
