How do I clean and maintain my turntable?
Your turntable is a finely tuned, sophisticated piece of audio equipment that will require regular cleaning and maintenance over time to keep it performing at its best. In this article, we'll cover the basics of keeping your turntable in top shape.
The stylus guard
Your stylus includes a guard to protect it from damage. It is recommended to keep the guard installed when the turntable is not in use.
Cleaning the stylus
The tip of the stylus is very small, due to this dust and debris from the grooves of your records will build up on the stylus tip, even when your records are brand new, or look clean. A dirty stylus can result in skipping, static, crackling, and distortion. When the stylus is dirty, it cannot track properly in the grooves and generates additional static.
It is important to clean your stylus regularly. If your records are older or difficult to clean, it is recommended to clean your stylus before every record with a stylus brush. Be sure to brush from back to front to avoid damaging the metal cantilever.
Each stylus has a recommended number of hours before it should be replaced. For specific information on this, refer to the manufacturer's website.
Cleaning your records
All records should be cleaned regularly to clear them of dust, debris, and static. This includes brand-new records which can still hold debris from the pressing processing, as well as dust and fibers from the inner sleeve. This is easily done with a record cleaning brush, but for deep cleaning, there are a number of "disc washer" type kits on the market.
Cleaning the turntable
Protect the stylus during cleaning by installing the included stylus guard.
The plinth, dust cover, and, acrylic platter should be cleaned with a clean, soft, lint-free, microfiber cloth. Take extra care when cleaning these parts as they can be easily scratched by dust and debris that may be on the cloth.
Belt maintenance
The belt on your turntable should be replaced if you notice it's very loose or has signs of damage such as cracks or splitting. Your belt should last you for years provided it's not exposed to sunlight, chemicals, or oils.
